Reading reflection pt. 3

My report is on the bibliography of Coco Chanel by Lisa Chaney

1.) I was surprised that chanel lived such a rebellious and scandalous life. I knew she is famous for her fragrance and her clothing line, but I never understood her impact on the fashion industry. She and her ideals led into the 20tth century fashion during a time where women's rights were blooming in the early 1920's and where WW2 took hold on multiple fashion run counties like France, Italy, and America for five years. I admired her willingness to stand out from the rest of the women and taking risks to live her life to the fullest. I was not a fan of her drug habits because I know how hard it can be to get over that and how hard it is for others to support her; I think I just wanted her to be who she was without killing herself. Well, she started off poor and build her way with her ideals, her spirit, and her beauty. She used her assets to gain a following and did not let anything stop her from achieving her dream.

2.) I think her personal connections to people in high power like Picasso, DalĂ, and Stravinsky, artists who hold great influence in the art/ fashion world; art influences fashion and style. I also think her charming personality really helped people like her and want to invest in her product. She was alive and different than other designers in that day; she lead a new era of expression.

3.) I was surprised how she had relations with a German during WW2 and did not get arrested. It was illegal to fraternize with the enemy, not to mention it was punishable by death. How did she not get blacklisted or how did she not go into ruins. On top of that how was she able to fight off media outlets with multiple lesbian love affairs when being gay or experimenting in that time was also publicly  shamed. How did she survive when everything was pinned against her?

4.) I would ask her how she managed to keep on going through all her trials and life decisions? and I would ask if she held on to friends and family even after they found out about her life decisions? I ask because it must have cost her, personally, a lot to be where she was and with the scandalous life she lived many people may not have liked her on a personal level.

5.) I think her life motto would have been live like there is no tomorrow. I think she worked hard in the beginning but then stalled off when she considered her success as solidified; she lost the drive toward the end, but it worked out for her. I like how she is the example of defeating the odds and not letting your dreams get sullied by others. Though her methods were unconventional and I don't agree with all of them I still have to applaud her for doing something no one else could.
