Buyer Behavior
1.) Pick a segment: the segment I chose is adopters
2.) find three people to interview: I found a student at UF who adopted her cat from the local humane society, a vet technician who works with a rescue group, and a father of three who is interested in adopting a dog.
3.) Need Awareness:
Interview 1: Though Jessica was lucky enough to find her perfect pet she said that before, while she was looking to adopt, she would have loved to know which cats would fit best to her lifestyle before going to every animal shelter in south Florida to look for her forever friend. It would have saved her time and heartache from the shelter environment.
Interview 2: Gladyis was a surprising interview that I didn't expect for her to find a need with my product. Nevertheless she does her reason being that a lot of the shelter animals go through trauma and physical hurdles. She takes care of those animals and they are the ones that usually get returned. She has to treat them when they leave and when they come back, but it breaks her heart knowing that this animal did not find the right home to need their needs.
Interview 3: Bill has been looking to adopt a dog for his three kids for a while. problem is time, the time needed to look through shelters and rescues to find their perfect match. He acknowledged that if shelters had an easier way to view a profile online or a better less time consuming way to find a right pet that he would find it extremely useful.
4.) How did they respond to their need:
Interview 1:She tried to go visit the website of the shelters before going to them but in her case the cat section of the pages lacked true character description so she just went to different shelters and hoped to find the perfect pet.
Interview 2: She talked to her boss about improving the adoption process, specifically with counseling potential adopters, but they said that they already have a system in place that works just fine. To the animals returned, they were seen as outliers to her bosses comments.
Interview 3: He mostly searched online for animals but he couldn't feel a connection with most of them, so he took a couple of online tests to see which breed would best suit him and his family. He got a couple of breeds and of course mix of breeds he prefers so they will continue their search through specific breed type.
5.) Findings:
So for all three interviews I think time, care, and characteristics were the main problems with going through the adoption system. The adopters wanted fast results while the technician wanted to best results. It was surprising how i found a person who shared my perspective of caring about adopter traits and personality just as much as people care about the animal traits and characteristics.
6.) Conclusion:
The need of awareness is 50/50 I would say, at least 3 people before finding my first interview that saw a need for my system. I think the opportunity is their it's just not discussed about alot. Most people think once an animal is out of the shelter that they are in their forever homes and alot of animals have the chance to feel that love, to get that second chance, but what about the ones who don't? These animals deserve just as much of a chance, if not more, to get adopted than any other animal at the shelter.
